NC's Senate Dem Candidate is Gay

This is very interesting. He's the only democratic candidate in the primary - and given Elizabeth Dole's unpopularity, North Carolina promised to be one of the top tier races. Should I be optimistic and think an openly gay candidate can win a Senate race in North Carolina, at least against a weak incumbent that no one truly likes? NC is certainly a state under rapid transition, so there is some hope.
