I was watching some NECN videos on the political race (they've got some great reporting, btw) and I watched this hilarious one on how Kerry Healey was talking about gun control and said, "I'm going to welcome this debate on crime - any time Tim Murray or Deval Patrick wants to bring it to me."
Tim Murray was standing about five feet away, behind the reporters. Whoops!
Tim Murray wanted Kerry Healey to release her GOAL questionnaire, which is a gun group only slightly less crazy than the NRA. Healey said she wouldn't "weaken" any laws in Massachusetts, "I think the laws that are here in Massachusetts that are some of the toughest in the country are just right and I'm not going to weaken those laws in anyway."
Except, well, I guess that's a matter of opinion. Why? Because she's now calling to strip police chiefs of their rights to grant gun permits. Funny how this comes out right after the GOAL questionnaires. While I'm not against state-wide standards, it seems odd to take away local control over an issue where the Chief of a local town just may have a better idea if someone who wants a gun represents a threat as opposed to a "sportsman."
Some random comments on the event: this is exactly the sort of thing a person running for Lt. Governor should do. Murray created a lot of buzz with this event, despite the fact that he's supposed to be the also-ran. He severely embarrassed Kerry Healey, who could barely stand toe-to-toe with her opponent's running mate. Imagine how strong Deval Patrick's position is when he can send Tim Murray to tackle Kerry Healey and expect a Murray coup. Brian McGrory is right, Kerry Healey should just be happy she got this far.
